Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency expanded its mandate in the maritime domain in October 2016. It, along with sister EU agencies EMSA and EFCA, stands at the centre of Europe’s efforts to expand cooperation in carrying out coast guard functions. In addition to border control and security these include maritime law enforcement, customs activities, environmental protection, fisheries control and search and rescue.
